"My work with you has truly transformed my life and has helped me get reacquainted with the real Johnny and knowing that I am enough." - John/Johnny

What’s in a Name?

There are moments when a name stops being just a name—and starts asking a question of you.

This has been coming up for me lately and in the work with my clients. Not in an abstract way, but in a lived, embodied way—through conversation, through work, through being called in different ways by different people, and noticing what happens inside me when a name lands in a certain tone.

It has made me wonder about something simple, but not small: What is a name, really?

Names as Doorways

I didn’t always have the name I use now. As a child, I carried a different name—one that held an earlier version of me, before life began to shape identity through expectation, adaptation, and learning how to belong in the world. My name was Reron (Rearon) until I was four years old.

Then came the name I’ve lived with for most of my life. Chad. The name that appears on documents, introductions, professional spaces. The name that has carried me through work, relationships, responsibility, and the shaping of a life that had to learn how to function in a structured world.

And then, something else emerged. A spiritual name. Not assigned by family or institution, but discovered through experience and inner recognition. A name that felt less like something I chose, and more like something I remembered. Blue.

Each of these names carries a different version of me. Not in contradiction—but in layers.

Who Are We When We Are Called?

I’ve noticed something subtle but profound: When I am called certain names, different parts of me come forward. Some names activate structure, responsibility, and clarity. Some names activate familiarity, social ease, and the ability to perform a role I’ve learned well.

And some names—less common, more intimate—seem to bypass all of that and land somewhere deeper. In those moments, I don’t feel like I’m being addressed as a function or a role. I feel… seen. Not for what I do. But for something closer to who I am underneath what I do.

The Body’s Response to Being Seen

When I was in Costa Rica, emmersed in my sex shamon retreat I experienced something simple but unforgettable. When "Blue" was spoken to me, I felt a shift in my body. A softening. A release. A sensation like something inside me lifting—expanding—taking breath. Like a butterfly taking flight inside me. Not escape. Emergence.

A movement from containment into visibility.

And what stayed with me wasn’t the name itself, but the feeling of being recognized in a way that didn’t require performance.

The Names We Inherit, the Names We Choose

We often think of names as fixed. But I’m not sure they are? Some names are inherited before we know ourselves. Some are given to help us belong. Some are carried for decades because they become familiar, even if they no longer fully fit. And some names arrive later in life—not as reinvention, but as recognition.

Not everyone needs a new name. But many of us are already living with multiple names inside us—different expressions of self that come forward depending on where we are, who we are with, and how safe it feels to be seen. The question isn’t which name is real. It’s which name brings us into greater alignment with truth in the moment we are living.

When a Name Becomes a Mirror

Recently, I’ve become more aware of how deeply I respond to being seen accurately—not superficially, but accurately. There is something profoundly human about it. To be recognized not for the role we are playing, but for the presence behind the role. It doesn’t always happen often.

But when it does, something in me relaxes. Something becomes more honest. Something becomes more alive.

Maybe the question isn’t simply what’s in a name? Maybe the deeper question is: Who do I become when I am called in a way that truly sees me? And what parts of me are still waiting for that kind of recognition?

If you are ready to experience the power of breathwork, travel, getting outside your comfort zone and learning something new about yourself; I would love to hear from you. We can set up a time to connect, breath and explore what's possible.

When we slow down enough to listen, our emotions become less overwhelming and more like roadmaps to deeper understanding. This matters because emotional awareness can lead to deeper self-awareness, more intentional choices, and a more compassionate relationship with ourselves.

In a world that constantly asks us to move faster, produce more, and push through discomfort, breathwork offers something radically different: a return to ourselves. Grounding breathwork invites us to slow down, settle into the present moment, and notice what is happening beneath the surface. When we create space to breathe with intention, we also create space to feel, process, and respond to life's choices with greater clarity.

What Is Grounding Breathwork?

Grounding breathwork is the practice of using steady, conscious breathing to anchor your awareness in the body and the present moment. Research suggests that deliberate breathing practices can support stress reduction and improve mental well-being, in part by helping shift the nervous system away from fight-or-flight and toward a calmer, more regulated state. Grounding techniques are often paired with breath because they bring attention back to physical sensation—your feet on the floor, the rise and fall of your chest, the subtle movement of air entering and leaving the body.

The Power of Slowing Down

Slowing down is an opportunity to align with our body and our souls spiritual path. In many cases, it is how we reconnect with what matters most. When we pause and breathe intentionally, we interrupt automatic patterns, tension, urgency, and emotional suppression. That pause can become a doorway to awareness. Instead of reacting in the moment or overwhelm, we begin to respond from a place of awareness. Even a few minutes of mindful breathing can have a positive impact on your present experience, help lower stress, improve focus, and make it easier to access a grounded sense of calm and purpose.

Giving Voice to Your Emotions

Our emotions do not only exist in our thoughts—they live in our bodies, too. Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, shallow breathing, heaviness in the chest, or a fluttering stomach can all be signals that something inside us is asking for attention. Breathwork helps us listen. As we breathe more consciously, we often become more aware of sensations we have ignored or pushed aside. This awareness can help us name what we are feeling, whether it is grief, anger, fear, relief, or longing. Giving voice to emotion does not always mean speaking it aloud right away. Sometimes it begins with simply acknowledging, “This is here,” and allowing that truth to exist without judgment.

The Benefits of Listening to What Our Emotions Are Communicating

Emotions give us information about our inner experience. Listening to them helps us better understand our needs, triggers, values, and boundaries. When we acknowledge emotions early, they are often easier to process and move through. This can reduce emotional buildup, overwhelm, or reactive behaviors. Emotions often show up physically in the body. By checking in with our emotions we can help reduce tension, fatigue, discomfort, or unease in our day to day. Emotions can signal when something feels aligned, unsafe, unresolved, or important. Listening to our emotions can help us make choices with more clarity and intention. When we honor our emotional experience instead of dismissing it, we build trust with ourselves. This often leads to a more honest relationship with self and a stronger sense of personal integrity.

What Our Emotions Are Trying to Tell Us—and Why It Matters

Our emotions often carry important messages about what we need, what feels unresolved, and what may be out of alignment in our lives. They can reveal where we need rest, clearer boundaries, healing, connection, or change. When we slow down enough to listen, our emotions become less overwhelming and more like roadmaps to deeper understanding. This matters because emotional awareness can lead to deeper self-awareness, more intentional choices, and a more compassionate relationship with ourselves.

Me in Peru on the Salkantay Trek between Cusco & Machu Picchu, September 2025. A 30 plus mile trail reaching 15,000 feet above sea level. I had to climb the mountain and walk down through the cloud forest before I could experience the magic of the lost city.

If you are walking through the end of a long-term relationship by choice, it may help to remember this: grief is not proof you made the wrong decision. It is proof that something mattered. And sometimes the most loving thing you can do is bless what was, release what no longer works, and trust yourself enough to begin again.

There is a particular kind of heartbreak that comes when a long-term relationship ends not in chaos, betrayal, or one dramatic final moment, but in clarity. A light that turned on, that can’t be turned back off. A knowing of the path, cultivated in deep practice and shattered distortions. It is the grief of knowing that love may still exist, and yet the relationship in its current form can no longer hold who you are becoming. Choosing to separate can be the healthiest and most honest decision, but that does not make it easy. When you leave by choice, you are still grieving a life, a rhythm, a shared language, and the familiar shape of your days. Comfort.

The Hidden Grief of Choosing the Ending

One of the hardest parts of an intentional breakup is that the outside world does not always know how to hold it. If you are the one initiating the change, people may assume this separation is a loss or failure. Somehow you are the victim of circumstances or bad actions. Our culture has trained us to see only winners and losers. However, separation does not have to be forced upon us, it can be a choice, non-binary. Choosing this path does not make it easier or erase grief just because a decision was conscious. In fact, it can be even more complex. You may mourn the person while also knowing the partnership is complete. You may miss the comfort while recognizing that comfort was intertwined with patterns that kept you small. You may feel relief and sorrow in the same breath. Both are real.

What Conscious Uncoupling Really Means

Conscious uncoupling is often misunderstood as a polished phrase for a breakup that should somehow feel graceful all the time. But the heart of it is much deeper than that. It is the decision to end a relationship with awareness instead of blame, with honesty instead of avoidance, and with respect instead of destruction. It does not mean the ending is painless. It means you are trying not to minimize the pain of loss. It means you are willing to recognize what this relationship taught you, where old wounds and habits repeated themselves, and why loving someone is not always the same as being able to grow beside them. Conscious uncoupling is letting go, releasing to make room for new experiences and relationship with self. It’s a courageous answer to a call, deep within.

Grieving More Than the Person

When a long-term relationship ends, you are not only grieving a person. You are grieving the structure that held your life together. The morning routines. The text you always sent. The way someone else knew the backstory without explanation. The version of yourself that existed inside that partnership. Even unhealthy patterns can feel comforting because they are familiar. Security does not always mean peace; sometimes it simply means predictability. So when you leave, part of the grief is the loss of what was known. You are stepping away not only from love, but from the old survival strategies, roles, and identities that once helped you feel safe.

Beginning Again Without the Old Script

That is why this kind of ending can feel so disorienting. You are not just losing a relationship; you are being asked to meet yourself outside of it. Independence after years of togetherness is rarely glamorous at first. It can feel quiet, exposed, and unfamiliar. But inside that discomfort is the beginning of something honest. A new chapter is not built by pretending the past did not matter. It is built by honoring what was true, releasing what became harmful, and choosing not to repeat the patterns that once felt like home. Little by little, you begin to discover that freedom is not the absence of grief. Sometimes freedom is what grief is making room for.

The Tender Hope Inside Letting Go

There is courage in ending something with care. There is courage in admitting that love alone cannot repair old patterns. There is courage in grieving what was good while also telling the truth about what no longer fits. Conscious uncoupling is not about making an ending look beautiful from the outside. It is about making it as whole and humane as possible from the inside.

If you are walking through the end of a long-term relationship by choice, it may help to remember this: grief is not proof you made the wrong decision. It is proof that something mattered. And sometimes the most loving thing you can do is bless what was, release what no longer works, and trust yourself enough to begin again. Grief as growth.

I am sharing all of this because it is exactly where I am today. Days a way from "officially" moving out of the house, separating and ending a relationship with a man I have loved for more than twenty-years. I know... I will love him for another twenty years or until death due us part because he has been and always will be my chosen family. Consciously uncoupling so we can love and live differently. In the grief, I have found growth.

You've heard some of my story, but the other part is that I truly enjoy connecting with others, exploring the world and having new and amazing experiences. As often as I can, I chose to ditch convention and old pathways. I've learned the hard way through my own personal struggles. At anytime I can embrace my own journey and desires, welcome change and to say "YES" to opportunities the scare the sh*t out of me. It's with that spirit I invite you to join me, not for a vacation, but for a queer escape and reboot. Starting today and this summer, embrace the change you want to be and see in the world.

Me in Peru on the Salkantay Trek between Cusco & Machu Picchu, September 2025. A 30 plus mile trail reaching 15,000 feet above sea level. I had to climb the mountain and walk down through the cloud forest before I could experience the magic of the lost city.
